What to Wear to a Job Interview by Summit Employment Professionals

What to Wear to a Job Interview

How you present yourself is a key factor in the success of any job interview. A smart, pulled-together appearance can help convince the hiring manager that you’re a good fit for the company. Plus, a professional outfit can boost your self-confidence!

Here are some tips on what to wear for your job interview.

Pro Tip

Look at the company’s website and social media. You may find on-the-job photos that will give you an idea of the dress code. If the job you’re interviewing for has a uniform or very casual dress, images of the office staff can give you an idea of how to dress for the interview.

General Interview Outfit Guidelines

What to wear to an interview varies depending on the company and position. Here are some basics you can adapt to your interview.

Do Wear

  • Dress pants, slacks or skirt with collared shirt or blouse
  • Collared shirt with sport coat or suit jacket and optional tie (for more formal offices)
  • Dress or pantsuit
  • Dress shoes, heels or boots
  • Clothing you feel comfortable and confident wearing!

Don’t Wear

  • Jeans or sweats
  • Clothing with writing or graphics
  • Clothes that are too tight, loose or revealing
  • Excessive jewelry or makeup
  • Clothing with holes
  • Hats or anything that covers your face
  • Opened-toed shoes
  • Athletic shorts
  • Tank tops
  • Clothing that has your undergarments sticking out (boxers, bra straps)
  • Athletic shoes

Personal Grooming Tips

  • If you have facial hair, make sure it is neatly groomed
  • Avoid strong cologne, perfume, and other scents (many people are sensitive to them)
  • Make sure fingernails are trimmed and clean
  • Ensure your clothing is wrinkle-free and lint-rolled if needed
  • If you eat before your interview, make sure your teeth are clean and breath is fresh

Be Prepared

Before the day of the interview, do a “dress rehearsal” and try on what you plan on wearing. This will make you feel extra prepared for the big day and will relieve the stress of figuring out what to wear the day of.

Remember to dress comfortably and in a way that represents you and your personality. The more comfortable you are, the better you will perform. Go out there and rock that interview!
