One scary part of the career change process is the interview. Help calm your nerves and boost your self-confidence with a professional outfit.

You only get one first impression – and those matter when interviewing for a future job. Looking professional will show your interviewer that you are prepared to put your best foot forward and knock the interview out of the park. How you present yourself is a key factor in the success of your interview. A smart, pulled-together appearance can help convince the hiring manager that you’re a good fit for the company.

Be overprepared for your interview by knowing exactly what to wear. You’ll look more professional and ready to answer any of their questions.

Examples of what to wear to a job interview

  • A shirt with a collar
  • Dress pants or any pants that aren’t jeans
  • Women – dresses, shoes without laces, skirts, heels, pantsuits
  • Dress shoes or boots
  • Minimal jewelry

Places to shop in the Wichita, Kansas area

If you’ve never had to dress business casual before then you’re probably asking, “where do I go shopping for these items?”. Start with looking in your closet and try to make what you already have work. No need to go buy a whole new outfit. But if you’re needing some new items here are a few places you can look:

Dillard’s clearance

Be prepared to spend some time digging for gems. There are tons of options and a wide range of brands and styles. You’re bound to find quality items from brand names for a great price. Located in Towne West Square.

Uptown cheapskate

A secondhand store that hand picks each clothing item they sell in their store. They’re organized and even color-code all their clothes – so you don’t feel overwhelmed when looking for specific pieces you may need. Choose from quality clothes that are trendy but also at a good price point. They have several locations around the Wichita area.

Plato’s closet

A similar concept to Uptown Cheapskate. They sell trendy secondhand clothing for young adults. They also have multiple locations in Wichita. Find them in the Eastgate Shopping Center at 8241 E Kellogg Dr, Wichita, KS 67207.

What not to wear when interviewing for a new job

The clothing you wear to an interview should be elevated compared to your day-to-day outfit choices. The interviewer still wants to see your personality shine and for you to be comfortable in what you’re wearing. But make sure you aren’t so dressed down that you look unprofessional and unfit for the job role. Follow these guidelines when choosing what not to wear:

  • Clothing with holes
  • Clothing that is too revealing
  • Hats or anything that covers your face
  • Opened-toed shoes
  • Athletic shorts
  • Tank tops
  • Clothing that has your undergarments sticking out (boxers, bra straps)
  • Athletic shoes

Before the day of the interview, do a dress rehearsal and try on what you plan on wearing. This will make you feel extra prepared for the big day and will relieve the stress of figuring out what to wear the day of. Remember to dress in something that’s comfortable and represents you and your personality. The more comfortable you are the better you will perform. Go out there and rock that interview!
